American Samoa
100 Years Under The United States Flag
Centennial Edition

by J. Robert Shaffer

A look back at the century of American involvement in these islands. Dozens of Samoan cultural artifacts have been placed upon the pages, illustrating particular aspects of traditional Samoan life. Many of these artifacts have never before been exhibited; none of them has been presented before in color tableaux that give such a rich insight into the material wealth and culture of American Samoa.

With the aid of over 200 archival photographs, color plates, artworks and historical documents obtained from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and the American Samoa Museum, the Centennial Edition looks at various historical events in the lives of American Samoans as well as those who came to live in their islands. These articles illustrate perhaps more eloquently than words the persistence of Samoan material culture and way of life at a notable period in the history of the United States.

Reader Reviews

American Samoa is one of the most handsome books it has been my pleasure to examine. The photos, artwork and design are wonderfully combined.

American Samoa is the most complete book on Polynesian people, their islands and culture, that I have ever seen. The pages are resplendent with art, history, culture and archival photos. The attention to detail is extraordinary. This book is a must for the Hawaii State Library system.

Patrick McNally
Hawai'i State Librarian

There is not another book on the Pacific like it. American Samoa will be the standard by which all other books on the Pacific islands will be judged.
